Darkly Bound cover mockup Darkly Bound: Characters

Avalon Jacobs – The protagonist of the story. She works as the Head Stage Manager at the Golden Stag Theatre in London. She bears a horrible curse that causes her to turn into the cruel thief and murderer Nightshade on the nights of the crescent moon. With her job at risk and her father due to return from war soon, she earnestly desires to be rid of the curse, but doesn’t quite know how to do it. She also desires peace in her life, which she eventually finds in her new relationship with Jesus.

Nightshade – Avalon’s evil alter ego, the cyborg-like being she becomes when the curse activates. She is very much what Avalon is not – she loves parties and excitement, has powers that make her nearly impossible to catch, answers to no one but herself, and has no compassion or empathy for anyone. She has been active for six years, stolen a wide variety of things, and killed over two thousand people.

Barnaby Garnock – A veteran actor at the Golden Stag Theatre and a sort of mentor for Avalon. He is held in high regard by the actors and crew at the theatre. He is the first person to learn of Avalon’s identity as Nightshade. He is also the person who tells Avalon about Jesus.

Nicholas “Nick” Jameson – The head sound designer and pyrotechnician at the Golden Stag Theatre. He has cybernetic legs as a result of an accident eight years previous which damaged his real legs. He doesn’t get along well with Terrence, his fellow sound designer, but is good friends with Avalon and Barnaby.

Terrence Houghton – An arrogant and duplicitous man who came on staff at the Golden Stag Theatre five and a half years ago. He is known for turning on the charm when women are around but despising his male coworkers. He works as a sound designer along with Nick, but they can’t stand each other. He used to work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, or so he says anyway.

Jago Kharthos – the High Prince of the Realm of Revenge, a realm within the vast world which the evil spirits inhabit. He is the villain of the story and Terrence’s true form. He took on the form of Terrence to be able to keep an eye on Avalon, with whose curse he is very involved. He disappears for a while after doing kurinache with Avalon, but eventually returns to try to stop Avalon from revealing her curse at the theatre.

Shea Jacobs – Avalon’s younger sister and the one who cast the curse on her (with Jago’s assistance). Unlike Avalon, she has known nothing else but the R Andromedean culture and fully embraces it. However, when on a mission to Charmia with her boyfriend Llednar, she discovered the witch-sirens and eventually left her old life to become one of them. When she found a letter from Llednar to Avalon, she mistakenly believes Llednar loves Avalon instead of her, so she takes the resulting anger out on Avalon in the form of the curse. For this act, she faces death when Avalon arrives on Charmia, but eventually is condemned to exile.
